This three piece set includes 'Starlight Over the Rhone,' 'Starry Night' and 'Cafe Terrace.' Some believe 'Starlight Over the Rhone' is the first in the series of 'Stars' painted by Vincent, painting 'Starry Night' the following year. In both paintings, the heavens are alive with the energy of starlight radiating into of the dark blues of the sky. While 'Starry Night' is probably Vincent van Gogh's most famous painting, 'Cafe Terrace' is considered one of van Gogh's most noteworthy. Remarkably, the 'Cafe Terrace' is still in Arles serving drinks to its patrons, though it is now called Cafe Van Gogh. It appears much as it did when van Gogh painted it over a hundred years ago.
Standing out as one of the most important works of art produced in the nineteenth century, 'Starry Night' was painted while Vincent was in the asylum at Saint-Remy. Van Gogh stayed up three nights in a row to paint the view from his window. Unlike most of Van Gogh's works, 'Starry Night' was painted from memory and not outdoors as was Vincent's preference.
