Story Behind the Art
These items are made in a small studio near the Mediterranean Sea in Israel. The studio is situated in a small agricultural village called Bnei Tzion and is run by Ika and Rami Hamburg. The studio participates in a special program which employs several handicapped people who do stone setting, glass cutting and other finishing work. The silver used in this jewelry is also 90 recycled. Needless to say, the 2000 year old roman glass shards are also recycled! Ika and Rami have developed the unique way of setting roman glass, stones, and pearls into the silver, which is to inlay them rather than bezel set them, so that all these tiny materials are all hand placed and create a rich mosaic texture and look. Due to continued disputes in Israel the economy is depressed. Making these items for not only helps these jewelers to maintain their studios vut also helps them feel connected to the larger world at a time when many people in Israel feel quite isolated.
