The Story Behind the Art:

The city of DuengYiang in ZheJiang province has been famous for its wood carving throughout the Chinese history. Work from this area has been used for the emperor's palace-the Forbidden City in Beijing. Between World War II and other conflicts, many artists lost their jobs and the art of wood carving almost vanished. In the 50's the government gathered the old artists and re-organized them to revitalize this ancient art form. Now, the DuengYiang woodcarving industry has taken on a new life as people are incorporating this art into decoration and construction. Woodcarvings from this area usually are left free of stain and paint to emphasize the finer details of the carvings.
